Day 12 - Castlegregory to Doolin

We awoke to a beautiful, sunny day in Ireland. Our breakfast table was right in front of the window overlooking the waves crashing on shore. We are on our way to Doolin and the Cliffs of Moher via the ferry at Tarbert.

Jo Anne had some kind of bacon on croissant thing with mushrooms for breakfast. Of course we also had brown bread since we're in Ireland.

One or two more pics of the view from the B&B.

We left Castlegregory and had a little over an hour drive to the ferry. It was a beautiful drive through villages and along the coast.

Leaving County Kerry

And there's our little white car at the head of the que for the ferry. The people in the car behind us were from Chicago. He was so big he had to pull himself out of the car by hanging on to the door frame and squeezing through the opening.

I don't know if you can see it or not but there is water seeping out of the rocks with no visible source. Jo Anne said it reminded her of the verse where the Pharisees are telling Jesus to rebuke the disciples for sharing the gospel and He said, "I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out." Luke 19:40

The ferry coming in

It's called the Shannon Breeze

A little lighthouse on the crossing. The ride was 20 minutes and knocked 85 miles off of the trip to Doolin.

Off the ferry and headed to Loop Head lighthouse.

We passed this old cemetery on the way and decided to stop and see if we found any of our ancestors buried here.

We didn't.

The Loop Head lighthouse

We walked down to the cliffs from the lighthouse. It was a lot further and steeper than it looked.

You also can't see how far the cliff drops off into the sea.

Here's a glimpse of how high the cliffs were. Brave Jo Anne standing out on the edge.

Looking down àt the shelves of rock.

And the waves crashing

A keyhole worn in the rocks from the waves. Incredible when you realize how high up the hole is.

This picture doesn't begin to show how steep that slope is or how badly my knees were knocking standing there on the edge.

In case you can't read the sign it says "the nearest bar to New York"

We stopped in a little town for lunch and one of the pubs had a sign outside saying the special of the day was shepherds pie. Since that was one of the things on our list to eat we hopped on in to have some. It was delish! It had cabbage, pureed carrots and more potatoes on the side.

When leaving town we saw these two signs noting that it was "Home of Guiness"

And "Guiness makes you strong."

We arrived at the Cliffs of Moher. All I can say is WOW!

O'Briens Tower

The path we've been walking away from the tower.

See how tiny the boats look?

There's just no describing how insignificant these cliffs make you feel. Stay tuned for more cliff pictures as we do the cliff walk tomorrow.

Our B&B for the night. I picked this place because the host is very well versed in walking the coastal path to the cliffs and that is our plan for tomorrow. He actually guides groups on the walk but we just wanted to go on our own and take our time. However, we never even met him. It is a working dairy farm and the hostess was hanging clothes on the line when we arrived. We felt like we were sort of in the way and didn't really feel welcome.

The cows lined up and waiting for their evening treats.

The view from the back of the house.

Here's the house

Another view from the back

After taking a few pics of the scenery, we decided to walk down to a local restaurant and have dessert for supper. As we were walking, I was reminded of something mother always said and I told Jo Anne that by walking, mother would say we were "making provision for the flesh."
Oops. We were so quick to jump on that Banoffi pie that we forgot to take a pic first.

Irish coffee and hot chocolate.

The B&B advertised great views. The only problem was, you had to stand on the toilet and look through the dormer in the bathroom to see it. Obviously that didn't stop us. Although, I draw the line at posting the picture that Jo Anne took of me standing on the toilet taking the picture.

What an amazing day with the most glorious display of God's creation.

Today's stats: 4.67 miles and 11,543 steps
